Sporthall athletics success!

On Wednesday 18th January a group of selected Year 7 and Year 8 PE students attended Ashington Leisure Centre to participate in the annual Sporthall Athletics competition. Students competed fiercely against other schools in the Ashington, Coquet and Cramlington areas in a range of track and field events. The students jumped fast, high and far during the speed bounce, standing long jump, standing triple jumps and vertical jumps and raced to the finish line during the individual and team track sprint events.

All students who attended and participated were an absolute credit to themselves and Ashington Academy.

Particular highlights included:

Poppy, in Year 8, who applied her gymnastic power and scored a huge 6.20m in the standing triple jump.

Ava, in Year 8, who showed her athleticism in the standing long jump and the individual 6 laps race as well as showing genuine kindness when checking in on an athlete from James Calvert after they took a nasty fall on the finish line during the 6-lap race.

William, in Year 8, who participated in several track events showing absolutely no signs of tiring – a true competitor!

Jessica, in Year 7, who shook off her pre-race nerves and absolutely dominated the individual 6 lap race finishing first across the line.

The dream track team that is Aiden and Jamie (Year 7) cleaned up during the 2-lap race and the Year 7 boys relay teams came in second during the 1 x 4 and 2 x 4 lap relay.

A huge congratulations to the Year 7 boys' team for finishing first overall in the competition. They have qualified for the County round next month where they will be competing against school across the whole of Northumberland. We wish them the very best of luck!
